Huttese, the Hutts' original tongue, held the position of second most common language throughout the galaxy, only surpassed by Galactic Basic. It functioned as the common language within Hutt Space and the majority of the surrounding territory. Huttese achieved widespread adoption due to the Hutts' significant commercial and criminal influence across the galaxy. ## History The Baobab School of Speed-Learning provided a very well attended course aimed at fostering proficiency in Huttese, recognizing its significance as a prevalent means of communication across the galaxy. Owing to their unique snout structure, which facilitated ease of articulation in Huttese, all Nimbanels possessed fluency in Huttese, alongside Basic and their own native language. Recognizing the benefits of mastering this important tongue, the species elevated it to a semi-official language of Nimban. Huttese wielded such influence that it also rose to prominence as a primary language for the Rodian people. Given their extensive history of commercial interaction, Toydarians also commonly exhibited fluency in Huttese. While they typically favored their native Toydarian language over Basic, they would opt for Huttese if their first choice was unavailable. Huttese stood as one of the main languages spoken on Tatooine and similar worlds under Hutt control. Despite most Hutts possessing proficiency in both spoken and written Basic, they regarded Huttese as significantly superior and exclusively addressed others in it, often relying on protocol droids to provide translation services. The Hutts held dominion over three species: Niktos, Klatooinians, and Vodrans, tracing back to the era of the Third Battle of Vontor. The Klatooinians and Vodrans abandoned their respective languages, (Klatooinian and Vodran language), in favor of Huttese, often lacking literacy. However, the Niktos maintained their Nikto language throughout their servitude, only acquiring Huttese as a secondary language, and sometimes Basic as a third. Some Hutts would converse with their Nikto servants using the Nikto language. Huttese frequently featured words concluding with -a, notably -a(C)a (e.g., botaffa), palatalized l (rulya), and expressions formed through word duplication (rocka rocka, puna puna, chu chu). Another characteristic of Huttese was the pronunciation of x as a bilabial click. Notably, the Hutts lacked terms equivalent to the polite phrases "Please" and "Thank You." ## Speaking in Huttese ### Greetings - Achuta — 'Hello' [4] - Achuta, mah pee kasa ______ — 'Hello, my name is ' [4] - Ah'chu apenkee? — 'Who are you?' - Bo shuda — Greeting Listen (help·info) - Chowbaso [4] or Chobaso — [5] 'Welcome' [4] [5] - Choy? — 'What?' - Chuba! — 'Hey you!' The [Hutts](/article/hutt/legends)' original language, known as **Huttese**, was second only to [Galactic Basic](/article/galactic_basic_standard/legends) as the most commonly used [language](/article/language/legends) in [the galaxy](/article/the_galaxy/legends). It functioned as the _lingua franca_ within [Hutt Space](/article/hutt_space/legends) and most of the territory surrounding it. Huttese saw widespread use due to the Hutts' considerable commercial and criminal impact throughout the [galaxy](/article/galaxy/legends). ## History To encourage Huttese language skills, the [Baobab School of Speed-Learning](/article/baobab_school_of_speed-learning) offered a very popular course, acknowledging its importance as a mode of intergalactic communication. All [Nimbanels](/article/nimbanel-legends) had the ability to speak Huttese fluently, in addition to [Basic](/article/galactic_basic_standard-legends) and their own language, due to the fact that their snout anatomy made it simple for them to pronounce the sounds of the Huttese language. The species understood the advantages of learning such a vital language, and therefore made it a semi-official language of [Nimban](/article/nimban-legends). Huttese had a large influence, becoming a primary language for the [Rodian](/article/rodian-legends) species as well. Because the two races had a long history of doing business with one another, [Toydarians](/article/toydarian-legends) were also typically fluent in Huttese. They typically preferred to communicate in their [Toydarian](/article/toydarian_(language)-legends) language rather than Basic, but if that wasn't possible, they would use Huttese. Huttese was one of the main languages spoken on [Tatooine](/article/tatooine-legends) and numerous worlds under Hutt control. Although the majority of Hutts could speak and write Basic fluently, they regarded Huttese as a far better language and only spoke to others in it, frequently using protocol droids for translation. Since the [Third Battle of Vontor](/article/third_battle_of_vontor), the Hutts had been the owners of three species, [Niktos](/article/nikto-legends), [Klatooinians](/article/klatooinian-legends), and [Vodrans](/article/vodran_(species)-legends). The Klatooinians and Vodrans had given up their languages ([Klatooinian](/article/klatooinian_(language)) and [Vodran language](/article/vodran_language)) and replaced them with Huttese, and were typically illiterate. However, during their servitude, the Niktos kept the [Nikto](/article/nikto_(language)) language alive, learning Huttese only as a second language, and occasionally Basic as a third. Some Hutts used the Nikto language to communicate with their Nikto servants. Huttese contained many words that ended in **-a**, most notably **-a(C)a** (for instance, **botaffa**), palatalized **l** (**rulya**), and phrases made up of repeated words (**rocka rocka, puna puna, chu chu**). The pronunciation of **x** as a bilabial click was another typical Huttese feature. It is worth noting that the Hutts did not have words for the usual polite expressions of "Please" and "Thank You". ## Speaking in Huttese ### Greetings - **Achuta** — 'Hello' [4] - **Achuta, mah pee kasa ______** — 'Hello, my name is ______' [4] - **Ah'chu apenkee?** — 'Who are you?' - **Bo shuda** — Greeting Listen (help·info) - **Chowbaso** [4] or **Chobaso** — [5] 'Welcome' [4] [5] - **Choy?** — 'What?' - **Chuba!** — 'Hey you!' ### Counting in Huttese
The Huttese counting system presented a potential source of deception. While [Humans](/article/human-legends) possessed ten digits, Hutts had only eight; consequently, their numerical system operated on a base-eight structure. Hutts exploited this discrepancy for financial gain. They would frequently offer to vend twelve units of an item in Huttese, which equated to ten units in [Basic](/article/galactic_basic_standard-legends). In general, the complexity escalates exponentially with increasing values, and numerous species (including the [Rodians](/article/rodian-legends)) have suffered financial losses due to this numerical disparity.

## Behind the scenes
The Huttese language made its initial appearance in [Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi](/article/star_wars:_episode_vi_return_of_the_jedi). In the 1997 [Special Edition](/article/the_star_wars_trilogy_special_edition) release of Episode IV, it was incorporated for the newly recorded utterances of Jabba the Hutt. [George Lucas](/article/george_lucas) enlisted Allen Sonafrank to create the recordings. Sonafrank consulted with Jim Wilce, an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Northern Arizona University, and expressed concerns about the potential for misrepresentation of Quechuan people by an alien, particularly in light of Erich von Daniken's widely circulated theories regarding "ancient astronauts." Ultimately, a graduate student, proficient in pronunciation but not fluent in Quechua, recorded the dialogue. Huttese constitutes the majority of the alien vernacular employed in the cinematic productions. It is also featured in the games _Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith_, [Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace video game](/article/star_wars:_episode_i_the_phantom_menace_(video_game)), and _Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic_. Within the latter title, the dialogues were pre-recorded, encompassing diverse genders and emotional states. While these utterances did not align precisely with the subtitles, they were reiterated in accordance with the prevailing emotional tone. Beyond the lexicon, a formal grammatical framework and syntactic regulations are absent. The denotations of certain phrases are ascertained, but insufficient data exists to conduct a comprehensive, word-by-word analysis. The Huttese Glossary was first presented in the letters section of _Star Wars: Legacy_ issue [twenty-three](/article/legacy_(2006)_23).
