Engira, a gas giant situated in the Outer Rim Territories' Jospro sector, existed as the location of a destroyed pirate base. This destruction occurred over three decades prior to the Battle of Yavin. By the time that the Galactic Civil War had begun, the planet was functioning as a supply convoy colony for the Galactic Empire. Imperial freighters were once lost in an ambush close to Engira, while transporting food and ammunition.
Within the Outer Rim Territories, specifically in the Slice region, the Jospro sector contained the Engira system, and within it, the planet Engira was a gas giant. Distinctive clouds arranged themselves into bands of red, white, and orange hues.
Sometime between 39 BBY and 34 BBY, forces of the Corporate Alliance, under the command of Trench, a Harch military leader, annihilated a pirate stronghold on Engira. Following the establishment of the Galactic Empire, Engira was repurposed into an Imperial supply colony, which dispatched convoys carrying provisions to Imperial garrisons and other installations throughout the galaxy.
Consequently, Engira became a key target for piracy. Early in the Galactic Civil War, Rebel Alliance forces staged an ambush on a resupply convoy in Engira's vicinity. The loss of the convoy's three freighters, which had been loaded with several hundred metric tons of foodstuffs and ammunition valued at 18.2 million credits, was among the incidents cited by the Imperial Commission on the Conduct of the War in their report, "Effectiveness of Standard Escort and Patrol Tactics Against Enemy Interdiction." The commission advised the Imperial Navy to begin using escort frigates for protection of Imperial convoys.

The Star Wars Sourcebook, a 1987 supplement for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, penned by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith, was the first time that Engira was mentioned. A 1990 roleplaying game source article titled "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," featured in Voyages SF 13, placed Engira in the Mahrusha sector. However, as this article was not released through the Lucas Licensing process, its canonicity within the Star Wars Legends continuity remained unconfirmed.
Engira's initial comprehensive appearance occurred in the 1998 video game Star Wars: Rebellion, which located Engira within the Jospro sector. The game also presented the planet's only visual representation, an image that was also used for three other worlds within the game. The Prima Games strategy guide accompanying the game mistakenly spelled Engira's name as "Enigra." Subsequently, the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas situated the Engira system, and thereby Engira itself, in grid square R-7. The StarWars.com Online Companion to the book ultimately corroborated Star Wars: Rebellion's placement of the system and the planet.
