Toss

Toss, an Imperial captain in the Galactic Empire, held the position of commanding officer for IX3244-B. This Survey Team had the duty of locating a suitable place to build the Empire's Death Star II battle station. During Mission 759/B, the team came across the Forest Moon of Endor, which Toss considered an ideal spot for the Death Star construction. Lieutenant Kiviett, his second-in-command, warned him about the dangers posed by Endor's native Ewoks, but Toss disregarded these concerns. Due to his dissatisfaction with Toss's cursory reports, Emperor Palpatine later dispatched another Survey Team to further investigate Endor.

Biography

Surveying Endor

The Forest Moon of Endor, which Toss and Survey Team IX3244-B discovered during Mission 759/B

Toss achieved the rank of captain as an Imperial officer. Following the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY, Emperor Palpatine ordered the construction of the Death Star II battle station. Numerous Imperial Survey Teams scoured the galaxy searching for a suitable location to build the station. Captain Toss held the position of commanding officer of Survey Team IX3244-B for Mission 759/B, with Lieutenant Kiviett serving as his second-in-command. The team consisted of at least two stormtroopers and at least three men in light armor, in addition to Kiviett.

Before their frigate came across the Forest Moon of Endor, Toss and his team explored several planets. Orbital scans indicated that Endor could sustain Human life. Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, deemed the isolated moon a viable construction site, and he also believed that Endor's native inhabitants posed no danger to the Empire's presence, a sentiment that Toss shared.

Mission 759/B and later Imperial defeat

The Ewoks, whose threat to the Empire was dismissed by Toss

Upon detecting several sentient and primitive life forms on Endor through scans, Toss instructed Kiviett and others to investigate the moon, while he remained on the frigate to prepare a holoreport about the moon's discovery. Upon Kiviett's return to the frigate, he told Toss that Endor's Ewoks had led them astray and prevented them from reaching the species' Bright Tree Village. Toss, however, dismissed the Ewoks as a threat and disregarded Kiviett's suggestion to apply forest camouflage to all Imperial vehicles and armor. Toss reported that Mission 759/B was a success because it discovered Endor as a suitable location for the Death Star's construction.

Ultimately, Palpatine was not pleased with IX3244-B's shallow reports and dispatched a second Survey Team to Endor, led by Sergeant Pfilbee Jhorn. Jhorn also disapproved of the report, and the failure to mention the presence of dangers such as Gorax, condor dragons, and Sanyassan Marauders led Jhorn to consider IX3244-B a disgrace to the Imperial Military. In 4 ABY, the Ewoks of the isolated moon aided the Alliance to Restore the Republic in defeating the Empire during the Battle of Endor, and Voren Na'al, an Alliance historian, received a report from a captive Kiviett about his experiences with IX3244-B.

Personality and traits

Sergeant Pfilbee Jhorn (pictured) was displeased with Toss's superficial holoreport.

Toss did not believe that the Ewoks' primitive weapons were a match for stormtroopers, and he also believed that the remote location perfectly met Vader's requirements. He also laughed at Kiviett's reported issues with the Ewoks, believing that they posed no threat and stating that exterminating the species would be easy if they became problematic. Toss also agreed with Darth Vader that an environment that could already support Human life was preferable to wasting time on building life-support systems and domes for the Death Star shield generator.

Kiviett believed that Toss disregarded his report on the Ewoks because he was eager to take credit for finding the new Death Star's construction site. He also ignored Kiviett's suggestion to add forest camouflage to the Imperial vehicles and armor on Endor. Similarly, Palpatine was not satisfied with Toss's hasty report, and Jhorn felt the same way during his assignment leading the second Survey Team.

Behind the scenes

Toss was created for the short story "Report to Imperial Command," featured in The Star Wars Sourcebook (1987), written by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith. The character was later named in "Imperial Scouting Party," a story published in 1990 for Michael Stern's Galaxy Guide 5: Return of the Jedi, as the in-universe author of a report on IX3244-B's survey of Endor.
