Hydenock

The hydenock was a species of reddish, curving trees that were native to the world of Alderaan, and its bark was used to create a red-colored dye. A different version of the plant existed on Naboo, where the Gungans gathered it for the production of bubble wort. Later, when the Gungans started a colony on the moon called Ohma-D'un, the hydenock was brought there.

Biology and appearance

Hydenock trees were recognizable because their trunks had a gentle curve in the middle, and their bark and leaves were red. They only grew in sandy soil, and some people thought they looked unusual.

History

The planet Alderaan, which is one of the Core Worlds located in the galaxy, was the place where the hydenock originated. It often appeared in Alderaanian art, and a strong red dye could be made by crushing and boiling its bark. A different type of the species was also present on Naboo, in the Mid Rim, where the local Gungans used its bark to make bubble wort, which is the base material for all Gungan bubble buildings.

In 32 BBY, when the Gungans established a colony on Ohma-D'un, a moon of Naboo, they brought many plants from various places in the galaxy, including hydenocks. The hydenock population on Ohma-D'un was at one point close to disappearing, even as the planners of New Otoh Gunga wanted more of it to be harvested for bubble wort production. Gungan conservationists started a "Save The Hydenock" campaign, and someone from outside was brought in to lead a reforestation effort, while also ensuring that the settlers had enough building material.
