Galek were a species of long-lived tree that had its native origins on the Outer Rim world of Mandalore. These galek trees could survive for hundreds of years, achieving significant height over the centuries. The coloration of the leaves on the galek tree's branches was particularly notable, presenting a silver hue that contrasted with the yellow amber ferns commonly found growing within the galek forests of Mandalore.
During the Yuuzhan Vong attack on Mandalore during their invasion of the galaxy, the galek tree groves located near Keldabe, Mandalore's capital city, were among the few areas spared from the Vong's destructive efforts. In 40 ABY, Mand'alor Boba Fett recovered the remains of his deceased father, Jango, from the red sand deserts of Geonosis, transporting them to Mandalore. In one of the untouched galek tree groves close to the Kelita River, Fett interred his father's remains beside those of his daughter, Ailyn Vel. Subsequently, he made times visits to the galek-surrounded graves, both alone and with his granddaughter, Mirta Gev.
The galek trees made their debut in the Star Wars universe within the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force novel titled Sacrifice, penned by author Karen Traviss and released on May 29, 2007. The subsequent year, 2008, saw the inclusion of an informative entry about galek trees in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.
