Researchers pondered the fortress's purpose, with some suggesting it was a final defensive measure against whatever forces ravaged Hijarna, while others posited it was the invaders' base of operations.
Talon Karrde's smuggling syndicate utilized the Fortress of Hijarna as a gathering location. Karrde convened the chiefs of the Smugglers' Alliance at the Fortress to strategize the acquisition of a crystal gravfield trap intended for the New Republic. During this assembly, Niles Ferrier's treachery was exposed.
