Fleebog

The Fleebogs were a species of diminutive, sentient creatures, easily identified by their blue complexions, scarlet eyes, and a distinctive yellow carapace. These beings made their homes in intricate tunnel networks; a specific Fleebog community thrived beneath the Forest Moon of Endor, not far from the Ewok settlement known as Bright Tree Village. This particular group of Endor Fleebogs relied on domesticated insects both as working animals and as a source of illumination within their subterranean dwellings.

During the year 3 ABY, the Fleebogs of Endor faced a grave threat from the rapacious ra-lugg, a spider-like arachnid that had invaded their underground domain. Desperate to secure help from the Bright Tree Ewoks, the Fleebogs employed a unique plant called a damsel flower to reduce the size of the Ewoks' Princess Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka to match their own. With the aid of the miniaturized princess and fellow Ewoks Teebo and Wicket Wystri Warrick, the Fleebogs successfully overcame the ra-lugg, discovering that even the smallest individuals are capable of tackling significant challenges.

Biology and appearance

Fleebogs had yellow, spotted shells.

Fleebogs were a sentient species characterized by their extremely small stature compared to most other intelligent life forms. Their body structure was somewhat humanoid, although their limbs were proportionally short relative to their overall size. Each hand had three digits, including an opposable thumb, and each foot had two pointed toes. Reaching a height of only one inch, Fleebogs were significantly shorter than an Ewok—a species averaging one meter in height—and could easily fit within the palm of an Ewok's hand. Their skin was smooth and hairless, exhibiting a blue hue, with some individuals displaying black spots on their arms. The underside and tail were marked with red striations. A distinctive round, yellow shell adorned their backs, decorated with black spots.

On their high-domed heads, Fleebogs possessed two slender antennae and a pair of pointed ears. Their slanted, yellow eyes, lacking pupils, were positioned on either side of a broad nose. The wide and flexible Fleebog mouth was capable of a range of expressions and could articulate the Ewokese language. Their tiny, white teeth were sharp, with two fangs protruding even when their mouths were closed.

Society and culture

Fleebogs lived in underground tunnels and used domesticated insects as mounts.

Fleebogs made their homes in tunnels located just beneath the surface of the ground. These subterranean passageways were quite spacious relative to their small size, typically standing about twice the height and two to three times the width of an average Fleebog. For outsiders, these intricate networks could appear as confusing mazes.

The Fleebogs residing on the Forest Moon of Endor possessed access to relatively basic technology. They constructed doors and gates from sticks bound together with cord, using them to secure tunnels and create enclosed areas. They also used cord for restraining prisoners. These Fleebogs were familiar with the properties of the damsel flower, a plant whose pollen caused Ewoks to shrink, although they were unaware that the shrinking process would continue indefinitely until they witnessed its effects firsthand. They utilized domesticated beetle-like insects as both beasts of burden and mounts, and employed fire beetles to provide light in their dwellings. The Fleebogs of Endor communicated using Ewokese.

Due to their diminutive size, the Fleebogs suffered from an inferiority complex. They constantly feared larger predators—such as the ra-lugg, a spider-like arachnid equipped with sharp pincers—which prompted them to develop various defensive strategies. One such strategy involved using a stick to support a platform of twigs and string covered in rocks; if a ra-lugg attacked, the stick could be dislodged, causing the rocks to fall and block the tunnel. Another tactic involved breaching the bottom of a surface puddle to flood the tunnels below, drowning any intruders.

History

The Ewoks and Fleebogs established positive relations after defeating the ra-lugg.

Prior to 3 ABY, a Fleebog community had established itself on the Forest Moon of Endor, within the Inner Zuma Region of the galaxy. Some of these Fleebogs settled in the forest near Bright Tree Village and made brief, fleeting contact with the Ewoks residing there. However, the Fleebog population never exceeded one percent of the Forest Moon's sentient inhabitants.

By 3 ABY, the Fleebogs of Endor were being terrorized by the ra-lugg, a web-spinning arachnid predator. Despite having some defenses against the creature, the Fleebogs felt incapable of defeating it on their own and sought assistance from the Bright Tree Ewoks. However, the Ewoks failed to notice the tiny beings, and their pleas went unanswered. The Fleebogs then devised a trap for Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka, the princess of Bright Tree Village, by placing a damsel flower in her path. Upon smelling the flower, she began to shrink, and a group of four Fleebog emissaries abducted her.

Once underground with their captive, the ra-lugg attacked, forcing the Fleebogs to activate their defensive measures. This event convinced Kintaka of the danger facing the small beings. An Ewok rescue party—comprising Teebo and Wicket W. Warrick, who had been shrunk down to retrieve the princess—threatened to attack the Fleebogs, but the princess persuaded them to help the small beings instead. However, Kintaka continued to shrink at an unforeseen rate. Consequently, the Ewoks and Fleebogs agreed to retrieve a satchel of growing powder from the ra-lugg's web. The princess, now small enough to avoid the ra-lugg's attention, successfully retrieved the powder. She scattered some of it on the monster, causing it to grow larger and flee in surprise. The Ewoks then used the remaining powder to restore themselves to their normal size, and the Fleebogs learned that size is not a barrier to achieving great accomplishments.

Behind the scenes

The Fleebogs were the creation of writer David Manak and illustrator Warren Kremer for the Marvel Ewoks comic book. Their sole appearance was in Issue 11, "The Incredible Shrinking Princess," which was first published in January 1987.

Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds asserts that among Endor's numerous sentient species, only the Ewoks and Yuzzums were indigenous to the Forest Moon. The article "Castaways of Endor" adds only Duloks to this list, implying that all other sentient species on Endor were introduced from other planets. According to the article "Endor and the Moddell Sector," such introductions were relatively common due to the combined navigational challenges of a significant gravity shadow and a shield of space debris, which resulted in numerous starships crashing on the moon.
