Syren spice

Syren spice A spice sample

During the era of the Galactic Civil War, a distinctive and uncommon spice type came to light. This particular form of spice had the characteristics of being both organic and possessing medicinal properties.

History

The Rebel Alliance was the group that initially found this spice, ensuring that the Alliance alone knew its precise origins up to the time of the Battle of Yavin. The existence of the spice was discovered by Doctor Edvar Vang and Moxxar Krieg at a later time. The former agreed to cease his investigation into the spice after receiving threats, while the latter persisted in his search for the spice's source. Eventually, he met his demise through assassination.

Cal Handro's crashed ship on Rori.

The spice's existence became public knowledge when a transport carrying the substance for the Rebels experienced a crash on Rori, a moon of Naboo, which is located in the Naboo system. This event occurred in 1 ABY. Cal Handro, a smuggler and the pilot of the transport, survived the crash but subsequently disappeared into Rori's wilderness. The first to locate the wreckage were agents of the Black Sun criminal organization. They obtained a spice sample that was later analyzed by Tover Blackmoor, a chemist. The analysis results led the Black Sun leadership to pursue the missing pilot in an effort to pinpoint the spice's origin.

Meanwhile, several groups of spacers were searching for Cal Handro. These groups were recruited by Imperial Lieutenant Jevan Monsul, Alliance Officer Veega Madish, and Tyla Jinn, a friend of Handro. Some of these individuals gathered spice samples from the crash site and began their own investigations into this novel spice. Initially, they encountered Doctor Vang, who declined to share any information about the spice. Subsequently, they discovered the deceased body of Moxxar Krieg, Vang's friend. After escaping an ambush set by Black Sun, they uncovered the location of the Black Sun bunker. Inside, they engaged in a discussion with the chemist Tover Blackmoor, compelling him to divulge all he knew about the pilot and the new spice.

Subsequently, the majority of Black Sun criminals involved in the pursuit of the spice and the missing pilot were killed during a confrontation with the spacers at the estate of Tierce Martano. Rebel forces eventually apprehended Cal Handro, but he managed to escape with assistance from the Empire. The pilot sought to avoid being judged by the Rebel Alliance, as they had discovered his past involvement in slave smuggling. Ultimately, Rebel agents launched an attack, destroying Cal Handro's ship within the Naboo system and killing the pilot before he could disclose the spice's origin to the Empire.

Behind the scenes

This spice made its debut in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Sony Online Entertainment and distributed by LucasArts, before the game's shutdown on December 15, 2011.

The spice was a key component of the "Secrets of the Syren" story arc and was integrated into the game with the release of its initial chapter, introduced through "Publish 14," on March 9, 2005. While the spice was either featured or mentioned in all four chapters of the questline, it was never explicitly named. The spice's name and its associated background information were intended to be revealed in the fifth and final chapter of the story arc. The planned name for the spice was Syren, derived from its extraction from the roots of the Syren plant found on Kashyyyk. The fifth chapter was in development during October 2005, but its release was postponed and rescheduled for April 2006 with "Publish 28." However, the concluding chapter of "Secrets of the Syren" was never ultimately released. Despite the fact that the spice's name was never revealed to the players, the questline itself was named after the spice.

The "Secrets of the Syren" story arc was eventually removed from the game with the "Chapter 1," which was published on June 8, 2006. This removal was due to the significant changes planned for Rori with the introduction of the Battle of Restuss.
