DV-692 was an officer within the clone stormtrooper ranks of the Galactic Empire, serving the 501st Legion during the Galactic Civil War. In the year 0 BBY, he found himself stationed on the Imperial Star Destroyer known as the Devastator, under the direct command of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith. DV-692 took part in the Devastator's capture of the Rebel CR90 corvette, the Tantive IV, and subsequently led a squad to locate the ship's passengers. While searching one of the corvette's corridors, his squad encountered Leia Organa, the Alderaanian senator, and DV-692 used his blaster to stun her as she attempted to flee. Following this, his unit was responsible for escorting their captive to Vader and then to the Devastator's prison area.

DV-692 was a male Human clone who fought for the Galactic Empire as a low-ranking officer within the Stormtrooper Corps throughout the duration of the Galactic Civil War. He belonged to the stormtrooper legion famously known as the 501st, where he was given the responsibility of leading a squad within the larger unit. During 0 BBY, DV-692 received his assignment on the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer called the Devastator, which was under the commanded of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith.
In that year, Rebel operatives transmitted the stolen plans for the first Death Star, a new superweapon created by the Empire, to the Rebel CR90 corvette known as the Tantive IV. The Devastator pursued and captured the Tantive IV above the planet of Tatooine; this ship was the consular ship utilized by Senator Leia Organa of Alderaan. DV-692 and his squad, led by an assault commander, were part of the initial wave of stormtroopers to board the Tantive IV. After the Imperial troopers successfully overcame the initial Rebel resistance, Vader boarded the ship and instructed the stormtroopers to search for any remaining passengers and take them alive.
DV-692 divided his squad into two distinct groups, instructing one half to search a specific passageway and secure a junction, while he led the remaining troopers down another corridor. The overall objective was to thoroughly search the passageways located both astern and forward. One of DV-692's squadmates noticed Organa concealed in a small alcove and immediately alerted DV-692 to her presence. However, Organa reacted quickly, drawing her weapon faster than DV-692's squadmate and fatally shooting him dead. As Organa attempted to escape, DV-692 fired his E-11 blaster rifle, stunned her. Subsequently, the squad escorted Organa to Vader, who then ordered them to transport the prisoner to the Devastator's holding facility.
DV-692 was equipped with standard stormtrooper armor, lacking any identifying rank insignia, and he carried an E-11 stormtrooper blaster rifle during the engagement aboard the Tantive IV.

The character known as DV-692 initially appeared in the novelization of the 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, created by George Lucas. This novel, published on November 12, 1976, was ghost-written by Alan Dean Foster. The novel depicted DV-692 wearing rank insignia on his arm, a detail absent from the film released on May 25, 1977. DV-692's first visual representation occurred in the first issue of Marvel Comics's Star Wars series, which was published on April 12, 1977. This comic was written by Roy Thomas and featured illustrations by Howard Chaykin, Jim Novak, and Marie Severin. It is worth noting that the comic only depicted his right hand and feet.
DV-692's first live-action appearance was in A New Hope, where he was played by an uncredited extra. This scene was one of the last to be filmed during principal photography in the United Kingdom, taking place between June 29 and July 16, 1976, at Elstree Studios. Terry McGovern, a disc jockey, provided DV-692's lines, which were transmitted via walkie-talkie and recorded by sound designer Ben Burtt. The sound effect for his stun shot was created by combining a note played on an ARP synthesizer with a "rising pitch and a delay" to create a bombinating sound, along with the sound of an air cannon. DV-692's helmet was missing a heat dispenser vent decal, which should have been visible on the helmet's "cheeks." In 2002, the A New Hope expansion set for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Trading Card Game was the first to officially identify the trooper as "DV-692," a clone stormtrooper.

The script for the 1981 Star Wars radio drama, as presented in the 1994 publication Star Wars: The National Public Radio Dramatization, referred to DV-692 as "3rd Trooper." In the radio drama, his line was slightly extended, suggesting that another trooper from his squad, rather than himself, fired upon Organa.
DV-692's dialogue exhibits slight variations across different adaptations of the film, including the novelization, the radio drama, the Marvel comic, and the Contemporary Motivators: Star Wars comic published in 1977. Furthermore, in the 1995 adaptation Classic Star Wars: A New Hope, the roles of DV-692 and his squadmate who was shot by Organa are combined into a single sergeant character. This sergeant identifies Leia's presence and stuns her, but not before she manages to shoot two other stormtroopers.
