Shatterpoints represented a multifaceted phenomenon within Force lore. Their perception demanded intense focus and concentration from a Force user. They could be likened to fault lines, representing divergent pathways of potential actions. Skilled Force users possessed the capacity to discern these vulnerabilities through the Force and subsequently exert influence upon them.

The perception of Shatterpoints was analogous to observing imperfections within a Corusca gem. In the context of events, a solitary action or "strike" held the potential to instigate a drastically different sequence of occurrences than initially projected. Frequently, the existence of shatterpoints proved ephemeral, susceptible to even the most trivial of influences. They could also manifest within the biological structure of living organisms. Cade Skywalker demonstrated the ability to identify shatterpoints within Darth Talon and Nyna Calixte, individuals he had previously rescued from mortal injury. By concentrating his Force abilities on the sites of prior healing, Skywalker could visualize and subsequently reopen their former wounds.
When applied to tangible objects, the principles of shatterpoints remained consistent. An individual could employ the Force to scrutinize an object, pinpointing both its cohesive elements and inherent weaknesses. By channeling the Force through themselves and into these vulnerable areas, they could effectively "shatter" the object, causing its disintegration into numerous fragments. The Force's bestowal of supernatural capabilities upon its adept practitioners allowed for the effortless destruction of materials presumed to be virtually indestructible. An illustrative example is Jedi Knight Jaina Solo, who, under the tutelage of her uncle, Luke Skywalker, effortlessly shattered a disc composed entirely of Mandalorian iron while honing this technique.

Kreia possessed the ability to perceive shatterpoints, which she characterized as "fractures." The equivalence of these two phenomena was implied in Kreia's description of the fractures, indicating that they could be manipulated by identifying the "critical point." Shatterpoints played a pivotal role in Kreia's philosophy: actions that initially appear benevolent could, in reality, yield detrimental outcomes if the multitude of subsequent repercussions remained uncertain.
Shortly before the First Battle of Geonosis, Mace Windu identified Count Dooku as a shatterpoint with the potential to bring an end to the war. However, his emotional attachments compelled him to spare his old friend's life, thereby enabling Dooku to proceed with initiating the Clone Wars. Within a relatively short period, the shatterpoint that had positioned Dooku as the epicenter of the war dissipated. Eventually, prior to Anakin's fall, Mace discerned a series of shatterpoints associated with Anakin Skywalker. Mace was also able to sense the Shatterpoint of Darth Sidious; his trust in Skywalker.
The Sith Lord Darth Caedus employed this ability to obliterate the beskar-forged armor worn by the Mandalorian Protector [Roegr]. By gently tapping the breastplate with the hilt of his lightsaber, Caedus achieved the complete shattering of the armor. When Caedus was still known as Jacen Solo, he neutralized the blasters of several Centerpoint guards by simply applying Force pressure to their weak points. Luke Skywalker revealed his own capacity to perceive shatterpoints and imparted this knowledge to Jaina Solo.
While within the Temple of the Sith, a Force ghost of Kol Skywalker contacted his son and instructed Cade on the utilization of shatterpoint as a defensive mechanism. Cade employed this technique to shatter the transparisteel enclosure housing his father's lightsaber, directing the resulting fragments of transparisteel towards the Sith. Cade subsequently utilized it to destroy the ancient Sith artifact known as the Muur Talisman. He also attempted to use shatterpoint to free Deliah Blue from a Yuuzhan Vong bioform that had been affixed to her back by Darth Maladi of the One Sith; however, the bioform resisted Cade's efforts, inflicting excruciating pain upon its host when exposed to the Force.
In the second draft of Star Wars, the Starkiller character possessed the ability to discern the Death Star's point of vulnerability through the Force, akin to sensing a shatterpoint.
