Maleling

Experienced malelings functioned as the personal protectors of Queen Zalem.

Maleling was a dismissive term employed by the Nightsisters of Dathomir when referring to male individuals. On the witches' planet, a highly exaggerated matriarchal system existed, where males were reduced to the roles of slaves and for breeding purposes.

How the Term Was Used

Within the culture of the Nightsisters witches, males were exclusively utilized as either slaves or for procreation, hence the alternative designation of "breeder." These breeders were typically robust Humans (or Near-Humans), whereas aliens were most often relegated to the status of mere "labor units." Malelings were typically confined behind proximity shields. It was common for breeders to be killed following mating, but this was not always a certainty.

The more compassionate Witches of Dathomir would utilize more neutral and practical terms like "males" or "mates" when referring to men. However, they still regarded them as servants and as their property. For instance, if a witch from a rival clan abducted a male slave to take as a husband, it was deemed inappropriate for the man's original owner to attempt to reclaim him. Nevertheless, male servants could earn their freedom by saving the life of a sister of the clan. "Male witches" or "male spellcasters" were highly valued.

Historical Information

In 31 BBY, the Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos, a Kiffar, was taken prisoner by a group of Nightsisters. Initially, the Sisters only saw him as fit for "chain-gang work," but some witches, such as Yongti, showed interest in mating with him. Queen Zalem, the leader of the Nightsisters, offered Vos a position as one of her personal bodyguards, which implied intimate relations. When he seemed unwilling, Zalem withdrew her offer and instead assigned him as a Lizard Keeper.

Following the defeat of Queen Zalem, Talzin, the Shaman of the Nightsisters, reunited the covens under her leadership and decided to limit the use of males to the Dathomirian Zabrak known as the Nightbrothers.

Years afterward, in 8 ABY, Teneniel Djo, a young woman, captured Prince Isolder of Hapes along with the Jedi Luke Skywalker. Her intention was to have Skywalker's children because she sensed his extraordinary connection to the Force.
