Noa Briqualon

Noa Briqualon, a male Human employed as a trader and a secondary scout, found himself stranded on Endor after his star cruiser experienced a catastrophic failure. This event led him to spend decades as a reclusive inhabitant of the forested moon's surface. The incident took place around 26 BBY, during an expedition with his companion Salak Weet to map the Moddell sector. Weet's search for a replacement crystal oscillator for their ship ended tragically when he was killed by a group of marooned Sanyassan Marauders. Abandoned, Briqualon constructed a home inside a hollowed tree. His only companion was a furry Teek also named Teek, and he dedicated himself to repairing the wrecked cruiser, which remained inoperable due to the missing oscillator.

In 3 ABY, Teek discovered Cindel Towani, an orphaned Human girl, along with her Ewok friend Wicket Wystri Warrick, and brought them to Briqualon's dwelling. Initially, the scout dismissed them, but as the children had nowhere else to go, Briqualon reluctantly allowed them to sleep on the floor. He initially stated that it was only for a single night, but on their third day with him, they followed him to the location of his star cruiser, which prompted him to share his past. Briqualon developed a protective bond with Towani, displaying a grandfatherly affection. When the Sanyassan Marauders kidnapped her and took her to their castle stronghold the following morning, he immediately began a rescue mission.

Together with Warrick and Teek, Briqualon infiltrated the castle and freed Towani and a group of her Ewok companions. They also recovered the crystal oscillator from Towani's own star cruiser, which the Marauders had stolen after killing the girl's family. Upon returning to his crashed ship, Briqualon used the oscillator to power the cruiser while the Ewoks held off the pursuing Marauders. He was forced to fight the sword-wielding Marauder King Terak using only a walking stick, but the battle ended when Terak was incinerated by the power of a magic ring he wore. With the star cruiser finally functional, Briqualon and Towani left Endor, and the seasoned scout eventually retired in the galaxy's Mid Rim.

Biography

Crash landing

Noa Briqualon, shipwrecked scout

During the latter decades of the Galactic Republic, Noa Briqualon, a male Human, served as a secondary scout. At some point, he also worked as a trader, adding to his professional experience over the years. Shortly before 26 BBY, Briqualon partnered with Salak Weet to map the Moddell sector. On their initial voyage, the two explorers reached the sector's Monsua Nebula and transmitted a responder signal. However, their star cruiser soon crashed on the moon known as Endor. The cruiser was one of many ships lost to the moon due to stellar debris and gravity shadows. With a damaged crystal oscillator, the star cruiser was rendered inoperable. The pair concealed their vessel beneath the forested moon's vegetation before attempting repairs. Weet eventually embarked on a hunt for a replacement oscillator, leaving Briqualon to remain with the ship.

Weet never returned alive; he was captured by a band of Sanyassan Marauders, who were also stranded on the moon. Upon learning of the star cruiser's ability to travel through space, the Marauders' King, Terak, killed Weet, seeking the "power of the stars" for himself. Although Briqualon eventually realized Weet would not return, he initially denied it to himself. He carved a hut from a hollowed-out tree, transforming it into a home. He befriended a furry Teek known as "Teek," who became his only companion. Briqualon frequently visited the crashed star cruiser to continue repairs, but the ship remained grounded without a functioning oscillator. He protected the area with booby traps, preventing even Teek from following him. Meanwhile, Weet's father launched a large search-and-rescue operation for the lost explorers, but he was forced to abandon the project in 22 BBY after four fruitless years.

New friends, new threats

Briqualon and Teek lived in their home for decades, and the scout lost track of how long he had been stranded on Endor. One day in the latter half of 3 ABY, he returned to find two visitors in his hut: Teek had brought home Cindel Towani, a young Human girl, and her Ewok friend, Wicket Wystri Warrick. Briqualon angrily ejected the new arrivals; without a place to go, they remained outside the hut. Grumbling, Briqualon finished cooking the dinner they had started and instructed Teek not to give any food to Towani and Warrick. However, when Teek used his speed to give the children some muffins, Briqualon watched through a window and said nothing. Towani and Warrick soon built a fire, and Briqualon brought them inside, claiming the fire was unsafe. Both children went to sleep on the floor, but when Towani woke up screaming from a nightmare, Briqualon gave up his own bed.

Briqualon left for his star cruiser the next morning after telling Warrick to leave. However, he prepared two child-sized sleeping mats while he was out and was disappointed to find his guests gone upon his return. The children soon returned from picking flowers, and Briqualon helped them bake a pie. After dinner, he tucked them into their new beds and allowed them to stay another night. In the morning, he told them to clean the hut; instead, the children followed him to the star cruiser. Briqualon was alerted to their presence by an alarm inside the ship and helped an upside-down Warrick out of a snare trap before reluctantly bringing both children aboard.

With his barriers broken down, the scout shared his story and admitted Weet was not coming back. Towani's family had also been murdered by the Marauders, and Briqualon invited her and Warrick to stay with him permanently. Back at the hut, he entertained his new companions with a song played on a flute. Towani danced happily, but she soon became sad over the loss of her family, and Briqualon comforted her. The next morning, Warrick awoke Briqualon and announced that Towani was missing. While searching for her, he and Warrick found Towani being carried away on the stallion of Charal, an associate of King Terak's. Briqualon retrieved a blaster pistol, an ascension gun, and some thermal detonators and set out after Towani with Warrick and Teek.

The Battle for Endor

The trio followed Charal to Terak's Keep, the Sanyassan Marauders' castle stronghold in the [Dragon's Pelt](/article/dragon%27s_pelt] savanna. Instead of swimming through the moat's dark waters, Briqualon fired his ascension gun's grappling hook at the top of a curtain wall. He was the last to climb the rope, and his ascent was sped up when Warrick tied the rope's other end around the ankle of a Sanyassan guard and pushed him into the moat. Sneaking through the castle, the three reached King Terak's throne room, filled with dining Marauders. After Teek retrieved some robes, Briqualon donned the apparel and placed Warrick on his shoulders. Teek stayed close to the scout's legs, and the disguised trio shuffled past the Marauders. Their next stop was the dungeon, where two guards were playing cards. Briqualon tasked Teek with retrieving the keys from one guard, and Teek also slipped a card up the guard's sleeve. When the other Marauder saw it, an argument ensued that ended with both men shooting each other.

Briqualon used the keys to free Towani and a group of her Ewok friends, who had been captured when the Marauders raided their village and killed Towani's family. Warrick and his father, Deej, grabbed the downed guards' blasters as the group tried to escape, but an encounter with a guard forced them back into the dungeon. As Wicket and Deej Warrick covered him, Briqualon set a thermal detonator and blew a hole in the dungeon wall. He then tossed his grappling hook at a monolith outside the castle, and as the Ewoks swung to safety, Towani showed Briqualon Weet's skeleton on the dungeon wall. She revealed Weet had been killed for the "power thing," and Briqualon spotted the crystal oscillator from the Towanis' star cruiser, taken in the Ewok village raid. Charal had kidnapped Towani, hoping she could use it to magically grant the Marauders spaceflight. Briqualon snatched it up, and after everyone escaped, he led them back to his ship. Guided by Charal, who had used a magical ring to metamorphose into a raven, the Marauders followed closely.

At his star cruiser, Briqualon put Warrick in charge of using his traps to hold off the Marauders. He then brought Towani and four Ewoks aboard to help install the oscillator, hoping it would allow the cruiser to fly. After several failed attempts, Briqualon powered up the ship, while Teek and the Ewoks battled the Marauders using Briqualon's traps and their own weapons. Overwhelmed, the Marauders fled, save Terak, who grabbed Towani after she ran outside to free Warrick from a trap.

Terak sent Wicket and Deej Warrick into the cruiser to demand "the power" for Towani's safety. Briqualon brought the oscillator out to Terak, proposing a fight for it in exchange for Towani's release. The King agreed, and the scout attacked with his walking stick. Terak wielded a sword and quickly gained the upper hand; however, when he knocked Briqualon down, Teek jumped onto Terak's head. As the King shook him off and attacked a defenseless Briqualon, Warrick fired a stone at Charal's ring on Terak's neck. The broken ring unleashed its energy and burned Terak to death.

After the battle, Briqualon offered to take Towani with him when he left Endor on his now-functional star cruiser, and she agreed. It took several days to prepare the ship. As they prepared to lift off, Teek and the Ewoks gathered outside. Briqualon said emotional goodbyes to Warrick and Teek, and after Towani said farewell to Warrick, the star cruiser departed Endor. Briqualon and Towani traveled the stars for some time, and the scout eventually retired in the galaxy's Mid Rim. Towani moved to Coruscant and became a journalist.

Personality and traits

Beneath his gruff exterior, Briqualon was a kind old man.

As young men, Noa Briqualon and Salak Weet intended to "tear up the galaxy." After Weet disappeared on Endor, Briqualon lived as a hermit for decades, with Teek as his only companion. The scout loved Teek and was sad to leave him behind. Despite Teek's companionship, Briqualon grew lonely and lost track of time. He reacted with hostility when Cindel Towani and Wicket Wystri Warrick arrived, indifferent to their lack of shelter. Though reluctant to make new friends, he softened and brought them inside, claiming the fire was unsafe.

Despite being gruff, Briqualon had a kind heart, which shone through when he comforted Towani after a nightmare. He was disappointed to find Towani and Warrick gone when he brought home sleeping mats, but he maintained his facade by telling Teek he was relieved. Partly due to Teek's urgings, Briqualon allowed the children to stay. He grew protective of Towani, displaying grandfatherly affection, and his comfort helped her deal with her family's deaths. Towani helped Briqualon come to terms with Weet's death. He merely tolerated Warrick, but by the time he left Endor, Briqualon considered the Ewok a fine warrior.

When Towani was captured by Charal, Briqualon stormed Terak's Keep to rescue her. When Terak later captured her, the old scout attacked the sword-wielding King with only a walking stick. Prior to Terak's attack, Briqualon commanded his Ewok troops and directed them to defensive positions. He also had starship repair skills. In 3 ABY, Briqualon had brown hair shot through with gray, and although balding, he had a long beard. He had light skin and brown, piercing eyes behind spectacles. He was ample and dressed in simple robes.

Behind the scenes

George Lucas created Noa for the 1985 television movie Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Lucas conceived the plot after watching Heidi with his daughter and deciding that Cindel Towani—who had appeared in 1984's Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure—should become an orphan and live in the woods with a grumpy hermit. Lucas explained his vision to Jim and Ken Wheat, who directed the movie. Although ABC Entertainment suggested Tom Selleck, Wilford Brimley played Noa. Brimley clashed with the Wheat brothers and refused to work with them; Joe Johnston shot all of his scenes.

Noa Briqualon and Teek Unleashed!

A rumor circulated that Noa swore while powering up his star cruiser, but the eighty-ninth issue of Star Wars Insider debunked it, citing the subtitles of 2004's Ewoks: The Battle for Endor DVD release as proving the line is "Aw, come on." A StarWars.com article from 2000 suggests that Noa and the other characters spoke a language translated for viewers, not Basic, as Wicket Warrick could speak and understand Basic in the movie but not in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, set later in the timeline.

A soundtrack covering both Caravan of Courage and The Battle for Endor, by Peter Bernstein, includes two tracks about Noa: "Noa & Terak" and "Noa's Ark." Various reference books and the StarWars.com Databank have provided further information on Noa. Details surrounding his crash onto Endor were given in a 2002 issue of the HoloNet News website by Pablo Hidalgo and Paul Ens. Noa's last name, Briqualon, first appeared in the ninth issue of Star Wars Gamer in 2002 and was mentioned in his Databank entry as early as 2004.

A light-hearted article by Bonnie Burton on StarWars.com in 2007 and later published in Star Wars Insider 100 in 2008 lists Briqualon and Teek as unlikely candidates for the Hasbro company's Star Wars Unleashed toy line. The article includes a sketch of the two in "unleashed" poses drawn by Pablo Hidalgo. In 2010, Briqualon was ranked #95 on IGN's list of the top 100 Star Wars characters due to Wilford Brimley's portrayal, his introduction of spectacles to the Galaxy Far, Far Away, his protection of an orphaned girl, and his attack on King Terak with only a walking stick.
