Mrids were a species indigenous to the planet of Velmor, characterized as diminutive, pink, quadrupedal beings resembling rabbits. The royal family of Velmor had, for numerous generations, cultivated these animals, incorporating them into a traditional ritual known as the Mrid Hunt. This hunt was a symbolic reenactment of the times when the Velmor natives had to hunt in packs in order to survive. Three years following the Battle of Yavin, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Prince Denid took part in a Mrid Hunt within the city of Den Velmor, the capital. They rode atop sizable Ycaqts, dividing into smaller groups to pursue the mrids into the nearby woodlands. Possessing strong survival mechanisms, mrids were skilled at concealing themselves, which made hunting them a demanding activity.
The initial appearance of Mrids was in Star Wars (1977) 49, which was penned by Mike W. Barr and made available in 1981. Walter Simonson provided the illustrations for them in the comic book.
