Odryn

A solitary planet situated within the Outer Rim's Noonian sector, Odryn served as the primary colony for the bellicose Feeorin species. This world, notorious for its extreme climates, was a tapestry of jungles and mountains, with Feeorin settlements ingeniously carved into the mountainsides. Despite the common misconception of Odryn being their homeworld, the Feeorin's true origin was lost to history; by the time of the Mandalorian Wars, Odryn housed a larger Feeorin population than any other location in the galaxy, fostering a deeply conservative and isolated culture. Feeorin society on Odryn was predominantly tribal until the legendary warrior Feln united the feuding villages under his leadership, thus becoming the revered Exalted. Feln later departed Odryn to train with the Jedi Order, eventually returning as a Jedi Master and a member of the clandestine Jedi group known as the Jedi Covenant. He ultimately incurred the wrath of his people by offering Odryn's sacred Sanctum of the Exalted for the Covenant's use as a repository for Sith artifacts, leading to his demise at the hands of his own people after he destroyed the Sanctum to prevent the Covenant's secrets from leaving the planet.

Description

A group of Feeorin "welcome" an outsider to Odryn.

Referred to as the ancestral homeworld of the Feeorin species, Odryn was geographically located in the system bearing the same name, within the Outer Rim's Noonian sector. The terrain of Odryn was rugged, defined by mountains and steep cliffs, where the native Feeorin constructed their villages, and it was also abundant with jungles and dense forests. Largely cut off from galactic society, Odryn was infamous as a world of extreme weather conditions; however, by 3963 BBY, the climate had become particularly erratic due to the presence of Sith artifacts within the revered Sanctum of the Exalted, resulting in anomalies like summer snowfall, intense monsoons, volcanic ashfall, and almost perpetual rain. In actuality, the planet's typical climate was moderately temperate, with an average temperature generally considered uncomfortably warm by Humans, yet agreeable to the Feeorin. Due to the reclusive nature of Feeorin society, little else was widely known about Odryn, and the few outsiders who returned from the planet described a world uniquely suited for the Feeorin, but inhospitable to others. Odryn was orbited by two moons, and its days lasted 41 standard hours, while its years spanned 303 local days. The planet possessed a standard level of gravity.

History

Despite the widespread belief that it was the original homeworld of the Feeorin, Odryn was, in reality, their largest colonial settlement, with their actual origin having been lost long before historical records began. Odryn remained largely isolated from galactic affairs until the era of the Mandalorian Wars. A significant portion of Odryn's history was marked by inter-tribal conflicts between Feeorin villages, a period that ended through the actions of the exceptional warrior named Feln. Recognized as one of the most powerful Elders in Odryn's recorded history, Feln successfully conquered and united all neighboring villages under his dominion, thereby becoming the Feeorin's esteemed Exalted: a title bestowed upon the oldest, and therefore strongest, Feeorin. Such was Feln's martial prowess that his people attributed magical abilities to him, which, in a way, was accurate—following his numerous victories on Odryn, a Jedi scout arrived on Odryn and confirmed his sensitivity to the Force. Feln soon left Odryn to undergo Jedi training, eventually achieving the rank of Jedi Master while concurrently maintaining his role as Exalted on his homeworld. During his tenure with the Jedi, Feln became affiliated with a secretive Jedi organization known as the Jedi Covenant, a group of seers dedicated to monitoring for the emergence of the Sith. One of the Covenant's key activities involved gathering and containing potentially hazardous Sith artifacts, for which Feln volunteered Odryn's revered Sanctum of the Exalted as a storage facility. This decision incensed Feln's people, who viewed it as a violation of their ancient laws by opening their most sacred site—believed to be the dwelling place of Feeorin ancestral spirits—to outsiders, while restricting access to all Feeorin except the Exalted. The presence of one of these Sith artifacts, the Helm of Dathka Graush, triggered severe climatic disturbances in the vicinity of the Sanctum.

Feln and Zayne Carrick do battle on Odryn.

In 3963 BBY, unforeseen events brought the Covenant's adversaries to Odryn, fundamentally altering the course of events. In the preceding year, the Covenant's First WatchCircle, including Feln, massacred their students on the planet Taris after misinterpreting a vision to suggest that one of them would precipitate the downfall of the Jedi Order. The surviving Padawan, Zayne Carrick, was falsely accused of the murders and became a highly sought-after fugitive in the Republic, embarking on his own mission to expose the Covenant's deceit and exonerate himself. His pursuit led him to Jebble, where he encountered a Covenant agent named Celeste Morne, whom he assisted in sealing herself within a life-preserving oubliette to shield her from the corrupting influence of the dark artifact known as the Muur Talisman. Despite being ordered to eliminate Carrick, Morne developed sympathy for the fugitive and instructed him to take her to Odryn and the researchers at the Sanctum of the Exalted, hoping they could alleviate her predicament. Morne perished when the Mandalorians bombed Jebble shortly thereafter, Carrick resolved to investigate Odryn regardless. By that time, the Covenant had been utilizing Odryn as their primary location for storing and testing Sith artifacts for a decade, rendering it an exceptionally valuable asset.

Traveling aboard the starship Moomo Williwaw, Carrick and several companions journeyed to Odryn to explore the Sanctum, circumventing the one-outsider quota by concealing Carrick and his partner Marn Hierogryph within their luggage. Upon entering the Sanctum, the outsiders discovered hundreds of Sith artifacts, which Carrick believed could provide the evidence he needed to expose the Covenant. After spending over a day documenting their findings, Carrick and Hierogryph were apprehended while attempting to leave and delivered into the custody of a vengeful Feln. Feln intended to execute Carrick immediately to prevent news of the events on Odryn from reaching the public, but he was dissuaded by the objections of his principal lieutenant, Borjak, who argued that Feeorin tradition dictated that anyone who had entered the Sanctum could only be challenged to unarmed combat. Once released, Carrick resorted to employing underhanded tactics and fleeing, although Feln eventually managed to catch up with him. Before he could deliver the final blow, however, Feln was informed that the Moomo Williwaw had been detected at the edge of the system. Fearing that Carrick's allies had returned to raid the Sanctum, Feln felt compelled to resort to the ultimate measure: destroying the Sanctum with pre-set explosives. The subsequent explosion, amplified by the dark power of the artifacts contained within, devastated much of the surrounding area and prompted Feln's tribesmen to turn against and kill him. Borjak then ascended to become Odryn's new Exalted, leading his people to rebuild away from the ruins of the Sanctum.

During the Galactic War several centuries later, the Feeorin people were disturbed by unsettling omens, which caused considerable panic among the superstitious natives. However, an investigation by an off-world agent revealed that these disturbing signs were the result of enemy operatives attempting to manipulate the Feeorin, and the exposure of this information caused those plans to backfire. Sometime afterward, a Republic corporation established operations on Odryn to initiate a trade in prefabricated goods. Odryn proved to be a lucrative market, as the company was able to replicate existing tools at one-hundredth of their original price, leading to the failure of some local artisans.

Inhabitants

Odryn was the native world of the Feeorin, a combative humanoid sentient species characterized by a relatively rudimentary, tribal society centered around simple, wooden villages constructed into the sides of Odryn's cliffs and mountains. Feeorin society was deeply rooted in tradition and emphasized the veneration of elders—according to both Feeorin customs and biology, the oldest Feeorin were the strongest, and thus held the most important and prominent positions on Odryn. The eldest Feeorin, known as the Exalted, was regarded as the leader of Feeorin society, and he alone was permitted to enter the sacred Sanctum of the Exalted, believed to be the dwelling place of the spirits of deceased Feeorin.

Feeorin society on Odryn was highly inaccessible to outsiders, contributing to the limited general knowledge about the planet. Very few Feeorin were known to ever leave Odryn, and those who did typically sought contact only with other Feeorin. However, the Feeorin of Odryn were not entirely isolated from the broader galaxy; they occasionally imported luxury goods and technology from off-world, and their security force meticulously monitored any off-world visitors and space traffic around the planet. This security force was suspected to be responsible for the disappearances of several ships and their crews who landed on Odryn. Although the planet was predominantly inhabited by Feeorin, a small minority of non-Feeorin also resided there. A verdant world, Odryn was home to a diverse array of fauna, most notably the Khadarok, a type of furry pack animal used as mounts by the Feeorin.

Locations

Odryn's sacred Sanctum of the Exalted.

By the time of the Mandalorian Wars, Odryn remained relatively sparsely populated—although it housed the largest Feeorin population in the galaxy, the planet lacked major cities, and settlements were scattered and infrequent. Feeorin settlements were largely primitive, makeshift villages consisting of wooden houses built into the sides of mountains and cliffs. One of these, the home village of the legendary Feeorin warrior Feln, was situated near the grand structure known as the Sanctum of the Exalted, a sprawling mountain complex that served as the holiest site for the Feeorin people. The natives believed that the spirits of deceased Feeorin elders continued to reside within the Sanctum, influencing Odryn's seasons. Only the Exalted was allowed to enter the Sanctum, although Feln violated this rule when he permitted agents from the Jedi Covenant to use the structure as a repository for Sith artifacts. The Sanctum was destroyed during Feln's confrontation with Zayne Carrick in 3963 BBY, resulting in changes to Feeorin traditions and the role of the Exalted.

Behind the scenes

The planet Odryn made its initial appearance in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Exalted, a story arc within the Knights of the Old Republic comic series, authored by John Jackson Miller and released in 2008. While the Feeorin species was already established in the Star Wars canon at that point, Odryn was Miller's creation. In Exalted, Odryn was visually depicted by Bong Dazo.
