Chubby Gundark

The Chubby Gundark, a Nyubba-class cargo barge driver from SoroSuub Transport Systems, served SoroSuub Corporation during the Galactic Civil War. This vessel, part of the corporation's Transport and Supply Division, was captained by the Sullustan Bungo Bung. He worked alongside his droid co-pilot 42-RST. The Chubby Gundark could carry cargo barges both fore and aft of its central section. It once set a record by carrying thirteen barges in formation, making an uncontrolled landing after traveling thirty-five parsecs.

At one point during the Galactic Civil War, the Chubby Gundark uniquely completed the Great Bantha Breakfast Biscuit Run between Sullust and Gastrula in the Outer Rim Territories. It transported Bantha Breakfast Biscuits from the Biscuit Baron restaurant chain. On its final run, a mutant known as a Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit nearly destroyed the Chubby Gundark. This creature, born from preservatives in the biscuits mixed with stale air, tried to devour the ship. Bung's quick thinking saved them; he realized the creature was vulnerable to the blue sauce served with the biscuits. With only one crate left, Bung allowed his ship to be seized by Captain Wankle, an Imperial officer commanding an Imperial-class Star Destroyer whom Bung had previously angered. Wankle took the last crate, but Bung informed him there was no blue sauce to go with it.

Description

The Chubby Gundark with three cargo barges mounted forward of the central section

The SoroSuub Corporation's Transport and Supply Division operated the Chubby Gundark, a Nyubba-class cargo barge driver built by SoroSuub Transport Systems. This vessel was slow and lightly armed, possessing just two double laser cannons. It required a crew of two, typically a Sullustan and a droid, due to the ship's automated systems. The Chubby Gundark featured a Class 2 hyperdrive, backed up by a Class 16 unit. Its top atmospheric speed was 750 kmh, it carried at least one escape pod, and could store enough supplies for two months.

The vessel, measuring twenty-two meters long, had an asymmetrical design. The main engines were offset to starboard on a lateral strut. The cockpit was on the port side, connected to the main body by a spar. The central section, with a cargo capacity of 200 metric tons, formed the bulk of the ship. The key features of the Nyubba-class were the docking connectors fore and aft of this section. These allowed additional cargo barges to be attached, increasing cargo capacity. Each barge could hold 400 metric tons. A typical configuration involved three barges ahead and three behind, but more could be connected to haul larger loads.

History

The Chubby Gundark

During the Galactic Civil War, the Chubby Gundark was commanded by Captain Bungo Bung, a Sullustan. He was assisted by his droid co-pilot and translator, 42-RST. The Chubby Gundark once set a record for hauling the most barges (thirteen) over thirty-five parsecs, ending with an uncontrolled landing. Bung strictly followed SoroSuub regulations, only transporting authorized cargo. After one such run, the Chubby Gundark returned to Sullust, emerging from hyperspace near an Imperial-class Star Destroyer.

Bung and 42-RST discussed the taste of Bantha Breakfast Biscuits and how many Imperial citizens had never tried them. They decided to sell the biscuits to planets lacking access to Biscuit Baron, the restaurant chain. Bung spent a month's wages on forty cases of biscuits, planning to use the Chubby Gundark despite it violating SoroSuub regulations. After launching from Sullust, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer intercepted the vessel for inspection. Upon discovering the cargo of Bantha Breakfast Biscuits and blue sauce, Captain Wankle confiscated thirty-nine cases to treat his crew. Released, Bung set course for the Outer Rim Territories to sell the remaining case.

Arriving on Gastrula in the Rayter sector, 42-RST negotiated with the Gastrulans to sell the last case. This created a market, and the Chubby Gundark became the sole vessel on the Great Bantha Breakfast Biscuit Run. The Run lasted only two weeks, as the biscuits tended to mutate due to elements in Gastrula's atmosphere. One such mutation was the Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit, a ravenous creature.

A Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit

During the final return trip, a crate of biscuits mutated in the Chubby Gundark's hold. The resulting creature ate through much of barge one, forcing Bung to jettison it to prevent a hull breach. As the creature moved to barge two, Bung armed himself with a blaster, left the cockpit, and went to stop it. While searching, the Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit surprised Bung, causing him to drop his blaster. The creature chased him through the hold, where Bung was cornered. He thought he was about to be eaten, but the creature panicked and fled. Bung realized he was near a crate of blue sauce. He squeezed a tube of the sauce on the creature, causing it to explode.

With the ship safe, Bung tasked 42-RST—who had fled in an escape pod and had to be retrieved—with cleaning up the mess. He knew the ship needed professional cleaning. However, they still had one crate of biscuits. 42-RST asked Bung what he planned to do with it. Bung had a plan, so he allowed Captain Wankle's Star Destroyer to intercept them upon returning to Sullust. He handed over the crate without argument, but regretted there was no blue sauce.

Commanders and crew

Captain Bungo Bung

Bungo Bung, a Sullustan employee of SoroSuub Corporation and a stickler for rules, captained the Chubby Gundark. His co-pilot was 42-RST, an RST Model Translator Droid given to Bung by the Mephout species for his work.

Behind the scenes

Jim Anderson created the Chubby Gundark for the story Bungo n' Rusti Get Carry-Out, published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 11 in 1998. Anderson both wrote and illustrated the story. He originally planned a series of comic adventures with Bungo and Rusti, featuring the Chubby Gundark, but Dark Horse Comics, Lucasfilm's sole comic licensee, prevented it. Dark Horse overlooked Bungo n' Rusti Get Carry-Out as a one-shot. However, the ship appears in Anderson's unlicensed Bungo n' Rusti stories on TheForce.Net, including Bungo n' Rusti Get the Record!, Bungo n' Rusti 101 Neks, Bungo n' Rusti On Strike!, Castaways, and Bungo n' Rusti Join the Rebellion?!! Part I. The story of the Chubby Gundark's record-breaking barge haul is told in Bungo n' Rusti Get The Record!
