LR1K sonic cannon

The LR1K sonic cannon, also known by names such as the Geonosian sonic cannon and the Geonosian defense platform, represented a potent artillery weapon. It was manufactured by the Gordarl Weaponsmiths on Geonosis both before and during the era of the Clone Wars.

Description

A sonic cannon being fired at the Second Battle of Geonosis

The LR1K cannon leveraged sonic blaster technology. This involved using internal oscillators to generate a devastating sonic wave. A containment sphere within the cannon stabilized the high-impact, concussive sonic energy until it struck a target, at which point it dispersed, creating an omnidirectional blast. Typically, the LR1K required two operators, either Geonosian or battle droid gunners, although its advanced and precise targeting computers could handle much of the operation. A direct hit from this weapon would result in the immediate death of an average clone.

History

During the Petranaki arena incident, four cannons were used against a Jedi strike force. Furthermore, numerous others were deployed during the Battle of Geonosis to combat invading clone troopers across the planet's arid plains. Later, they served in the defense of Geonosis during the Republic's second planetary invasion. Some of these sonic cannons were also used to protect mines located on the planet Rishi.

Behind the scenes

The sonic cannon made its initial appearance in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones upon its release. They were created using computer-generated imagery.
