Aron Peacebringer

Aron Peacebringer, a male Human native to the planet of Shiva IV, eventually rose to become the Warlord of the Calian Confederacy. He is renowned for his role in ending the generations-long conflict that plagued his homeworld. Previously, Shiva IV was consumed by incessant wars between the Calian Confederacy and the Twelve Tribes of T'Syriél. Peacebringer's martial journey started at twelve, growing up in this environment of constant fighting. His initial kill made him realize war's brutality, convincing him of the need to stop it. Known as Aron in those times, he sought political power, ultimately leading the Calian Confederacy by 2 ABY. As Warlord, he immediately engaged in discussions with Kéral Longknife, the Demarch representing the Twelve Tribes, and together they ratified the Concordat of Peace. This agreement brought to a halt the conflicts on Shiva IV for the first time within living memory.

This achievement earned him the surname Peacebringer, and he entered into a blood brother bond with Longknife. Together, they governed the newly peaceful world, suppressing any attempts to reignite the old conflicts. While looking into the destruction of the city of K'avor in 3 ABY, Peacebringer encountered Leia Organa, a leader of the Rebel Alliance. She had crashed on Shiva IV and was under attack by violent outcasts. Peacebringer came to her rescue, taking her to his palace, where he became deeply enamored with her.

This infatuation put a strain on his bond with Alisande, his cherished wife of many years. Before Peacebringer could sort out his emotions, both he and Organa were captured by Imperial General Bentilais san Sk'ar, who intended to seize control of Shiva IV. Peacebringer and Organa fought together, managed to escape, and ultimately killed Sk'ar, aided by Rebel allies who arrived to retrieve Organa. Witnessing Organa's affectionate embrace with Luke Skywalker, Peacebringer accepted that his love for her would never be reciprocated. He relinquished his feelings and returned to his wife and the now-secure Shiva IV, a more self-assured individual.

Biography

Peacebringer

Peacebringer as Warlord in his study

Aron, a male Human, was born on Shiva IV, a world distant from the galactic center. He spent his early years within the planet's confines, amidst the perpetually warring Human Calian Confederacy. This group was in constant conflict with the humanoids belonging to the Twelve Tribes of T'Syriél, another faction present on the same planet. At the age of twelve years, he participated in combat, personally killing an enemy in the traditional Calian sword duel. This event deeply disturbed him, leading to his determination to end the cycle of violence consuming Shiva IV. Later, he married Alisande, his beloved, and they had several children. Their first daughter passed away in infancy due to an illness that Aron also contracted. Although deeply saddened by his child's death, he eventually recovered. At some point, Peacebringer became one of the most formidable figures in the galaxy.

Aron climbed the ranks of the Calian leadership, ultimately becoming the Warlord of the Calian Confederacy in 2 ABY, with his capital situated at Illyriaqüm. His close friend and relative, Prince Ygal Delois, served as the captain of his personal guard. Aron used his position as Warlord to propose peace to Kéral Longknife, the Demarch of the T'Syriél. Together, they signed the Concordat of Peace and became blood brothers. For the first time in Shivan history, Shiva IV experienced peace, and Aron acquired the name Peacebringer. He dismantled the death cults dedicated to the Calian war gods, eliminating their priests and ending their worship, which caused controversy among his people. Not all accepted the peace, and some outcasts continued to attack peaceful settlements. Over the following year, Peacebringer received worrying reports that the outcasts were being gathered and trained into an army within the Drylands.

Encounter with an offworlder

Peacebringer leaps into combat to save Leia Organa.

In 3 ABY, Illyriaqüm lost all contact with the distant city of K'avor. Reports from nearby areas spoke of a bright flash occurring when communications ceased. The Warlord, accompanied by Longknife, Delois, and their comrade Jain Havero, embarked on a three-day journey to K'avor to investigate the situation. On the second night, while at the campfire with his men, he heard a gunshot. They quickly discovered a group of T'Syriél outcasts attacking a woman, who was the Rebel Princess Leia Organa. She had crash-landed on the planet during a mission to investigate Imperial activities in the region. Despite not knowing the enemy's numbers, Peacebringer rushed to save her, relying on the darkness to make his forces seem larger. When mounted reinforcements arrived, Peacebringer faced them himself, scattering the outcasts. However, he was concerned that his four-man party, the best warriors on Shiva IV, had struggled against the outcasts, who were better equipped and trained than usual.

Peacebringer then focused on the woman, whose Basic language he couldn't understand. Similarly, she couldn't understand the Calian spoken by Peacebringer and his companions. Peacebringer managed to communicate his name and learned that hers was Leia. He took the mysterious woman with him, teaching her Calian in the back of his repulsorlift transport. Upon reaching K'avor, they found the ground around it transformed into polished black glass, with blue flames above the city. Both the city and its inhabitants had been reduced to ash. Organa recognized the Cherenkov effect and warned Peacebringer not to enter the city due to the high levels of radiation. Peacebringer trusted her warning and turned back.

Peacebringer first lays eyes on Leia Organa.

Returning to his capital, Peacebringer dispatched his agents across the planet to determine the cause of K'avor's destruction. Weeks passed without answers, and rumors spread that the war gods were punishing Peacebringer for his heresy. The Warlord suspected someone was spreading these rumors to plot against him. He also found himself increasingly drawn to Organa, captivated by her beauty, courage, and exotic nature. While he still loved his wife, he felt a growing passion for Organa, which left him confused and guilty. Although Organa, now fluent in Calian, tried to speak with him, he avoided her, fearing the consequences of another meeting. He learned through others that she was an emissary from the Alliance to Restore the Republic, fighting the Galactic Empire beyond Shiva IV, and had crashed while investigating the world.

Capture

Peacebringer, between Organa and Alisande

The night before a gala celebrating the first anniversary of the Concordat of Peace, a month after Organa's rescue, Alisande informed Peacebringer of Organa's reports about a Galactic Empire. This empire dominated the galaxy and was eager for conquest, likely responsible for the destruction of K'avor, a level of devastation beyond Shiva IV's technology. At his wife's suggestion, he spoke with Organa, trying to ignore his attraction to her. At the party, he remained worried about the future of the peace he and Longknife had established. Alisande noticed his jealousy when Delois danced with Organa, but instead of scolding him, she acknowledged the human nature of temptation. She advised him to be cautious and wise, showing faith in his judgment.

However, after dancing with his wife, they didn't sneak away for a romantic moment as usual; instead, they separated, filled with doubt. When Organa left Delois and went to a balcony, Peacebringer stopped his friend and went to speak with Organa himself. She was upset that the Rebel Alliance hadn't rescued her yet and saddened by the loss of her homeworld, Alderaan, which Illyriaqüm's elegant courts reminded her of. Peacebringer tried to comfort her, but they were ambushed by T'Syriél stormtroopers trained by the Empire. Caught off guard, Peacebringer was knocked unconscious before he could react.

Peacebringer is held as Sk'ar's prisoner.

Taken from his capital to a hidden Imperial base, Peacebringer woke up in chains and was brought before General Bentilais san Sk'ar, the commander of the Imperial force tasked with conquering Shiva IV. He quickly realized the Empire had organized the outcasts and remained defiant towards the massive Kaleesh general. Sk'ar revealed his plans to enslave Shiva IV's inhabitants as Imperial shock troops, and Delois revealed his betrayal, aiding Sk'ar in exchange for ruling Shiva IV. Delois boasted about the plan to kill everyone in Illyriaqüm, destroying the government and creating chaos for Sk'ar and Delois to exploit as conquerors. Peacebringer was horrified by the betrayal of his close friend, his blood.

Battling the Empire

As he and Organa were led away, Peacebringer signaled the Rebel princess and attacked their guards, creating a diversion that allowed Organa to fight back. The Calian Warlord fought for his life, only catching glimpses of Organa's struggle against a knife-wielding attacker. When it seemed she had been killed, Peacebringer went into a rage, entering a Calian battle madness that amplified his strength. He broke his chains and killed the entire squad of guards. Reaching Organa, he found her safe, her assailant having narrowly missed her before she used the knife against the Imperial officer.

Peacebringer defends Organa as she attempts to defuse the bomb.

With most of the base's forces away on the mission to destroy Illyriaqüm, the pair stole a transport and escaped without much trouble. Organa piloted the ship past Sk'ar's TIE defenses and onto the airship Sk'ar was using for his attack. Peacebringer and Organa fought off waves of stormtroopers before evading capture and disappearing into the vast aerial battleship. They made their way to the bomb Sk'ar planned to drop on Peacebringer's capital, and the warrior stood guard as Organa tried to disarm it.

Delois injured Organa in a surprise attack, but Rebel reinforcements arrived, including Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca, two of Organa's closest allies, along with Longknife. While Organa disarmed the bomb, Peacebringer and his new allies fought off the Imperials. As Sk'ar tried to escape, Chewbacca shot down his flier with a gun mount, killing the would-be conqueror of Shiva IV. Seeing Organa celebrate with Skywalker, Peacebringer realized she didn't love him and never would, allowing him to accept that he could live without her.

Afterward, Peacebringer gathered his forces to eliminate the remaining Imperial troops and purged Delois's conspirators from his court within six days. Once secure, the Warlord held a ball to celebrate the world's defense, where Alisande put the matter of Organa behind them, with Peacebringer confident in his relationship with his wife. However, the ball was interrupted by the arrival of an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer in orbit. Using the Rebel freighter called the Millennium Falcon, Skywalker and his Rebel companion Lando Calrissian lured the ship into a black hole, ending the new threat to Shiva IV.

Personality and traits

Warrior of Shiva IV

Aron Peacebringer with Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo.

Aron Peacebringer's first experience with killing turned him against warfare forever. Despite war being central to his world's culture, he decided to end it, preventing further loss of life. He was willing to take any risk to achieve this goal. Although dedicated to peace, Peacebringer was also known as a fierce warrior, a formidable fighter when necessary. Despite being a warlord and ruler, he took pride in his appearance.

Committed to his homeworld, his people, and his family, Peacebringer desired the best for them and felt the weight of his responsibilities as one of the planet's leaders. He understood the fragility of the peace agreement and was determined to ensure its longevity. Peacebringer enjoyed good company, was a devoted family man, and valued his friends like family. Delois's betrayal was a major blow, as he considered the captain of his guard like a son. Muscular and imposing, Peacebringer had tanned red skin, dark brown hair, and brown eyes.

Relationship with Alisande

Peacebringer dances with his wife.

Aron married Alisande when he was young. They were deeply in love and had a child, who died in infancy. Rather than drifting apart, they grew closer and had more children, whom they cherished. When Peacebringer became the Calian Warlord, Alisande became his queen, and they enjoyed a happy married life. Their relationship grew stronger with age and remained vibrant, with formal dances often leading to private moments of passion.

However, when Leia Organa arrived, Peacebringer became infatuated. Though he still loved his wife and wanted to remain faithful, he couldn't deny his strong attraction to Organa. This caused him great distress and strained his relationship with Alisande, who noticed his interest in Organa. She didn't condemn him but warned him to consider his actions carefully. The issue resolved when Peacebringer realized Organa didn't and wouldn't love him, allowing him to overcome his emotions. Peacebringer reconciled with his wife and family, whom he still loved.

Skills and abilities

Aron Peacebringer succumbs to battle madness.

Peacebringer was one of Shiva IV's best fighters, raised in a Calian warrior tradition honed by generations of conflict. Although peaceful and thoughtful outside of war, Peacebringer was known for his combat ferocity, throwing himself into battle and cutting down his enemies. He was known to succumb to "battle madness," a state experienced by the Calian people. In times of stress, he would enter a berserker rage, becoming an unstoppable killing machine with superhuman strength and fury. Skilled in both hand-to-hand combat and sword fighting, Peacebringer combined skill with speed and athleticism. He was also a cunning strategist and tactician, as well as a capable pilot of the unique Calian aerial transports.

Equipment

As Warlord of Shiva IV, Aron Peacebringer typically wore a loincloth and a bandolier-type garment, offering little protection but serving him well in combat. Peacebringer usually used a sword in battle, but he was also a formidable unarmed opponent, especially when affected by Calian "battle madness."

Behind the scenes

Aron Peacebringer debuted in the fifty-third issue of the Marvel comic-book series Star Wars, written by Chris Claremont and released on August 18, 1981. Claremont and penciler Walter Simonson created the character by adapting unused art from the canceled Marvel Comics series John Carter, Warlord of Mars into a Star Wars comic. Carmine Infantino, a regular artist for the Star Wars series, had provided fill-in art for the series based on Edgar Rice Burroughs's space-fantasy warlord John Carter of Mars. After the cancellation, Marvel tasked Claremont with writing a new story based on the existing art and Simonson with adapting Infantino's art to fit the Star Wars comic series. The character of John Carter became Aron Peacebringer of Shiva IV in a story spanning two issues, Star Wars 53 and Star Wars 54. The "Star Words" letters column presented the issues as simply inspired by the John Carter stories.
